…So I have an idea… Why not drill the old nut out of the flywheel…. braze in a piece of brass rod and sand it flush for plating…. Drill and tap a different spot for the handle?

I think you might find that the location of the knob is placed where it is to assist in balancing the rotating unit. Place that hole in the wrong place the flywheel could wobble to the point of destroying the crankshaft

          .
          good thinking, but…
It’s a very low-speed engine , so can it do harm when you use it the whole day ?
probably yes, but an hour on the lake for fun…..
finding one with a perfect upper bearing is rare, they are worn out always, so….
          🙁

You would want to keep it pretty
            close to the original position.
Its location has to do with where
            it comes up on compression.
            Its where most individuals
will find it the easiest to pull
            through compression when starting.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

              very true
but you can get used to 2 inch or 5 cm change
              a position depends per person

              😉
