Would anyone have any experience with a little box that’s bolted behind and up against the distributor on my 1970 Evinrude triumph 60 hp? It has AETNA stamped on it, which I believe is the manufacturer, and I believe it is a rev limiter, Although I cannot find it on a parts diagram. I’m having issues with the motor cutting out after 20 minutes or so at full throttle, And I’m wondering if this little unit is causing the motor to shut off. Anyone know how this little unit actually works? It Engages the spark advance armature, And perhaps has a needle bearing where it presses against that armature. There is a wire lead off the back of it, which goes to the Bus panel. Do these have a history of going bad? Any thoughts or anecdotes on these little guys would be helpful thank you

That switch is a safety switch that prevents cranking the engine at too high of a throttle setting, it has nothing to do with the ignition system…

October 9, 2025 at 8:05 pm #300507Thank you, that’s very helpful! I was looking on the Distributor Group, not the Powerhead Group, but I see the switch now. With the push button Evinrude control box, and independent throttle lever, this would be a very good switch to have. I’m using a Johnson controller, I believe it’s a 1972 which has the throttle and the gear selection integrated, and also has a neutral safety switch, so I now have two safety switches. Thanks for your help on this.
