After a month of monkeying, I’m starting to loose patience with trying to get the top, stuck ring
off my Bendix piston, and sooner or later, it’s going to come off one way or another,
or perhaps ignored, and put back together as is.

Before I do anything drastic, I was wondering if I had a parts engine around that may have
the same size rings. In looking at the old Evinrude piston ring chart, I have my doubts,
but it does list these models with the same size ring…….

      Model # 46, 71, 77, 82, 83, 84, 94, 97, 105, & 118

Only problem is, I can find no reference to these models online as to year, hp, etc.
Model charts might suggest they’re pre- 1930 models.
      Anyone have any ideas???
      Thanks.

Frank, I know about the fellow out East that sells rings, and have purchased from
him before. I just thought perhaps I had a parts engine laying around, and
I started doing research, and ended up in a rabbit hole, side tracked, and
wondering why I can’t figure out what those Evinrude models are with the
          same ring size, lol.

None of those models you’re listing use piston rings with a 2 & 1/16th bore diameter. You are talking about a bore that is only 0.060″ over two inches in diameter.
            .

Most of them are either rowboat motor powerheads used on a high pressure or centrifugal pump, or else they are single or twin cylinder inboards. Rowboat motors mainly had bores of 2.625″ at that time.

Model 118 is a 1928 twin-cylinder pump model FV, so probably used a Fleetwin powerhead, which is a 2 & 7/64″ bore. Which at 2.109″, is a weird size.

At any rate – none of those motors would use a ring size that is going to help you right now. They will all be too big in diameter as well as thickness. The narrowest ring would be in the Fleetwin, and it would still be at least 1/8″ thick.

Sorry if that’s not helpful, but it is what it is.

            That bein’ say-ed – looky here….

Buc, FYI the newer Lawn Boy 2cycle motors have a 2 1/8″ bore 3/32 thickness ring. The old lawn boys had the same bore as the 5.5hp OMC motors 1 15/16″. Maybe you have an old mower laying around? Thought you might need to know that!

PM-t2, I did mention to the wife the other day that I’ll need new glasses soon.
I looked at the chart again…… you’re correct, there was no “Zero” in
front of the .625…….. I was over 1/2″ off, and those rings may be difficult
to get started in the bore.

Dale- I do have a couple of old lawn mowers……. will have to do a little research.
                Thanks.

Did you notice the bag of rings I have on my desk?

Yes, I noticed the rings. If necessary, are you offering them for sale,
or just trying to make me envious, lol.

I did make much progress on my stuck ring today, after soaking
in the OMC tuner cleaner another few days.
Only the last 1-1/4″ on the circumference is still stuck now,
so if I don’t break it in the next day or so, I probably won’t need
                    any new ones.

Do have to wonder though, how does one come by a whole bag of those rings?

I have boxes and boxes of NOS rings in different sizes and if you get stuck, I see some 2 1/16 X 1/8 in the pile. I make fixtures to hold rings and that way they can be turned to the proper thickness.
