      US MEMBER PAY BY CHECK

      When looking over these main components of this motor, can anyone determine the year(s) of it? Gas tank serial number is B22633.  Is the power head the one to start with to make it year correct?Evinrude RBM

          The serial number says 1914. All the parts are correct for it with the exception of the exhaust, so I would say you have a 1914 motor but the exhaust manifold and muffler can are from a 1915 or later. You need the earlier manifold that does not have the water plumbed into it and a muffler can that has two triangular hole patterns drilled in it.

            I believe the model B motor should have battery ignition. Someone has installed magneto ignition on your motor.

              The 1914 model B was also available with the flywheel magneto. The thing that makes it a a “B” from 1915 and up is the non-reversing lower unit.  Hope this helps.

                • Where clamps used back then?
                • Do I understand correctly that the motor was shut off then restarted in Reverse to reverse the movement?

                  In the photos I posted, that shade of gray is what I typically use on Evinrude rowboat motors of that era. It’s called  “Misty Grey” and I buy it in Canada. I like it because its a rust enamel that doesn’t need primer, and also becuase when it cures it is bullet proof against gasoline spills.

                  I have some notes from the 1990’s that list “Porch Gray” or “Battleship Gray” to be correct paint colour for the Evinrude motors.

                  Whatever you decide to paint it, the cylinder, crankcase, transom bracket, and gas tank all get the same colour applied.

                  For the hose, the reddish colour air compressor hose is fine, i forget the ID dimension, but its either 5/16″ or 3/8″. Funny for how many times I’ve cut that hose to install it on a motor and I can’t remember the inside diameter.

                  To clamp or not to clamp – if you use hose clamps, don’t use the modern gear type with the slots in the band. Thats just gross! Find some vintage brass clamps with the dual bands that have space between them and tighten up with a screw and nut (nut is usually square).  I’ve also run them without clamps on both ends, the hose usually fits tight enough on the water pump outlet as well as the cylinder inlet that you don’t necessarily need clamps to keep it on there. I’ve also wrapped some wire around the hose and gave it a few twists to tighten it up if I wanted something temporary. I’ve attached a couple of images of my 1914 Evinrude model B, hope the clamp shows up OK

                  Reversing – you understand correctly, with an evinrude Model B, if you want to go in reverse, you have to shut down and restart it going in the opposite direction. The rowboat motors don’t have 360 degree steering. now since you know aobut reversing t he B, you can understand why Evinurde developed the model “A” Evinrude with the reversing lower unit that made it possible for an operator to back the boat up without having to stop & restart the motor.

                    Thanks PM 2T, this helps alot! I will look into these points now. I like the clamp design and pics are great.

                    Also, is there a source that sells those heavy (thicker) head bolts.

                      There is a slight difference in the cover plate with the 3 screws on both units. Can anyone tell me the difference in model years and propeller requirement between these two? Should the same propeller work on both?
