I am re-working a 1950 Speeditwin and going through the Skip Hagerman’s manual I notice it says something about a pump seal, but there is no mention of it in the parts diagram.
Does anyone have an idea on what this seal is, like an O ring type thing? Is it needed? Is the manual misprinted?
Thanks all.
This motor was a Katrina flood motor, solidly stuck, but I am not letting that defeat me…LOL

There is a seal of sorts. Under the impeller, in the hole that the drive shaft goes into, there is a series of pieces that make up this seal. The first is a "grease seal retainer", part # 120827, which is essentially a soft metal washer. It is held in place by staking the aluminum around it.
Under that is a "Grease seal assembly" part # 194943, which is basically a rubber o-ring. Might be square cut, but I am not sure about that.
These sit on top of fibre drive shaft bushing. part # 170192.
Lots of pieces, but I think as long as it is fairly intact, the fact that you run grease in the lower should keep things OK for a while. I would just check periodically for water in the gearcase.
By the way, I got all this information from a SpeediFour parts list. I have a SpeediFour and a SpeediTwin that I recently went through, and the lowers are pretty much identical regarding these parts.
Good luck!

February 10, 2016 at 12:12 am #31712The Impeller Water Seal sits on top of the impeller, around the coupler bottom. It is like a leather ‘O’ ring but triangle shaped in cross section.
February 10, 2016 at 1:40 am #31717The way it looks in the book it does appear to be at the coupler. I’m not sure where I would find one as there was not one on it when I took it apart.
I was thinking maybe find a good O ring and apply some great to it and see how it does, that is unless someone knows of a source for such a part.
I did not take the lower unit apart, but I am sure the parts David mentioned are there as when I did pull the drive shaft out it was cleaned off of grease and even being in the flood the grease is not milky at all. I will be changing it, but that will come later.
Thanks all so much for helping me make sure I was seeing what I thought I had seen

February 11, 2016 at 3:54 am #31772On most of the Speeditwins and Speedifours I’ve taken apart, that seal was missing. I think I only saw it on one or two motors. So, maybe it isn’t too necessary.
February 11, 2016 at 11:29 am #31780I notice on the drawing for the older serial numbers the groove where the seal is supposed to go is not even there so maybe you are right.
I will try it without one when that day finally comes. I am waiting on a few parts before I can re-assemble this beauty. I am currently is the dis-mantled stage, cleaning, prepping and painting.
