Hello. I have a 1940 Evinrude Sportsman without spark. The issue was not in the spark plug, the wire to the spark plug, or the points. I did clean up the points and checked for conductivity on every part of the ignition system, but it seemed that the secondary circuit of the coil was nonfunctional per a multimeter test for conductivity (I am 100% positive it is the coil). Does anybody know if/where I would be able to find a functional coil for this? I believe that the whole stater plate/coil assembly is the same as the ELTO Aces of the same period. If a new old stock coil would be hard to come by, what type of coil should I use for a conversion, and how would I go about doing a conversion?

You can use this inexpensive two wire coil with some modification to the laments. You will need to ground the spark plug lead you don’t use. The two lead coil is a better choice as the single lead interferes with the crankshaft. https://www.ebay.com/itm/232218550107?itmmeta=01HSHZA1YJEA9DJXN19TMK514R&hash=item36114ddf5b:g:froAAOSwjDZYimAJ&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8EkFNaML4O3r7%2FD%2BbMrH8%2F8KfyA5wEEjhKLGPn7hMhe1UGg0u7podGb%2F6ALhrNE9plzmvo64einFmqRQoMt598vh%2BUV0uHyGR4bvTcivtnxBVHQi4dG9Uo8JzUZDDHJ7VTdiHy%2BIZmOzNFOT%2F0rRZ9iLr5JtoYnOjb0dlM9va4qpAlg2VGyzcdF62fGYMUwNfBj5qocIStMNiTsFAsfY3TYmLLqAB6Z1msPBRA3MfDKfXQiL5djn9tS5mdh8Pk76v%2FKEb9f5YgkfIxrDL6xGP5YBSUJG%2F%2BcaOJ%2BwxsxCWQYDcrgg2O0qIgN%2BF2847I70Gw%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR7ifqL_MYw

June 30, 2025 at 5:33 pm #297777Do I just take a few layers off of the laminates, sandwich it in the old side laminates, and then ground one wire to the stator plate?

That’s right. The ones you leave determine how high or low the coil is going to be. You will also need to make a hole for the screw on each side.

July 23, 2025 at 3:06 pm #298429does anybody have a picture of the wiring on such a coil conversion? I am not sure where the primary-condensor exit is or the points-secondary connection.

July 23, 2025 at 3:21 pm #298432Disregard that. I was able to figure out that the primary is black, secondary yellow, and the two metal dots/ends are the spark lead connections. Correct me if I am wrong.

The black is ground, the yellow goes to the points. (primary) 2 sparkplug wire points is the secondary.

July 23, 2025 at 3:54 pm #298436To clarify, the black wire is grounded (should that be on the stator plate or laminates, and what type of connection should be used?), the yellow is connected to the points (via the laminates, which are connected to the condenser, which is connected to the points?) and the wire from the points back to the secondary should be connected to the metal nubs? Does the spark plug wire get connected to the other metal nub?

Black goes to ground. One spark plug lead goes to ground. The laments contact the magneto plate so it doesn’t matter. The yellow wire and the condenser wire go to the same point on the points. Crimp on connectors work well

July 23, 2025 at 5:28 pm #298448Is there a possibility that you could send a picture of the wiring or a picture of a diagram? Only if it is not too much of a hassle…..I do not want to do the wiring wrong and mess it up.
