I picked up this little two horsepower Evinrude it’s a beautiful shape the guy said he couldn’t get it to run but he didn’t really know much about evinrudes and he told me the strangest thing…
He said that he put two head gaskets on to make sure it would really work.
I just looked at him and thought he must be joking no one would do such a thing and in my head I’m calculating the decrease in compression and the increase in the number of points of failure and just the general bad idea that that would be. ..
Then I looked close at the motor. And sure enough . Two head gaskets (see pics)
But then I started thinking well maybe there’s something to this that I don’t understand?! so I guess I’m asking if anyone who’s ever heard of putting two head gaskets on to make sure a motor would run better.?

Long live American manufacturing!
July 12, 2022 at 5:12 pm #262852Ok I got it apart and out.. this is one strange head gasket. Is it two gaskets packet together? Or is this just how they’re made? See pics

July 12, 2022 at 5:23 pm #262859Ok. The rabbit hole gets deeper folks..
On the inside metal surface of the head someone roughed it up but roughed it up probably a little too much
I’ve never seen marks like this this deep on the inside of the head is this from the factory or is this just someone who just went crazy with the abrasive wheel???
July 12, 2022 at 5:56 pm #262863We already know he was crazy. But maybe he ground off so much he had to use two gaskets (?)
July 12, 2022 at 5:56 pm #262864Okay now I understand why he was using two gaskets there’s a clearance issue between the piston and the head for some reason the Piston is hitting the head with a single gasket and it’s so bad that the fly you can hear it when you try to spin the motor it makes it terrible sound.
Someone has even tried filing the Piston away..
I’ve uploaded pictures where it’s hitting on both the top and bottom circled in red..
