Good Afternoon All-
I’m finally getting back into a couple of projects after several sidetracks.
I have a 1948 Evinrude Zephyr model #4404, S/N 22593 with the throttle dial knob on the tiller arm. It runs sort-of OK, but I took the covers and tank off to do a cleanup/tuneup. I discovered that the cam lever that rides in the cam slot under the magneto plate apparently isn’t connected to anything. The parts manual shows a rod that connects it to the throttle lever on the carburetor.
The rod is not only missing, it looks like it never had one because there is original paint inside the cam lever. Also, there is no stud on the throttle arm where it would attach. Again, it looks like it never had one.
Could it be that some of these didn’t have the linkage? Could the cam lever also serve some other purpose I can’t see?
I’d appreciate any help.

June 27, 2016 at 8:30 pm #39067Oddly enough, my 1946 Zephyr never had the tiller linkage. It only had the linkage that worked off the mag plate. I would talk one of the fellas here into posting a parts diagram. It sounds like something is incorret or missing.
June 28, 2016 at 12:52 am #39088Don’t know if it helps but I was looking at the parts diagram and there is a note about the throttle cam being Serial 70,001 and up. I don’t think my 4404 has a linkage from the mag to the carb but it’s been a while since I had it apart…

July 1, 2016 at 7:40 pm #39391Thanks for the response. I think I’m convinced that the linkage was never on this motor from the factory. It runs just fine without it. The only reason I can think for the cam lever is that it is left in place to limit the movement of the mag plate. A complicated way to go about it, though. But then again, everything about these motors seems to be complicated. The carburetor itself is a real piece of work…
July 1, 2016 at 8:37 pm #39399I just pulled a Zephyr carb apart. Had to get the manual out to figure out how to get the throttle valve out. Those guys didn t think simple …
