Does the exhaust cover gasket need any sealant prior to installation? Engine is an AD 11. Thanks in advance.

Always good to use some gasket seal compound on the exhaust gaskets. Also coat the cover screws.

A couple of pages back there’s a debate going on whether to use gasket compound. I’ve always lean toward using it, but they’re chatting about reasons not to.

If you have any aluminum anti-seize compound, that’ll go well on the cover screw threads.

Your AD11 is a 7.5hp, strangely enough the parts book only calls for one gasket, in between the block and inner water cover. This may be perfectly fine for a new engine with pristine mating surfaces, but I doubt having no gasket in between the outer and inner covers will seal very well on an engine that has been in service. These are old style gaskets, I would definitely use either the OMC/Merc gasket sealer or the 3M 847. Use the gasket sealer on the screws to keep them from rusting in place also.
So, it is up to you when it comes to how many gaskets, I would use two (one on either side of the inner cover) if it was mine….If you decide to only use one gasket as described in the parts book, be sure to use a strong sealer such as the 3M 847 between the inner and outer covers….
