I’ve recently acquired a 1963 Johnson FD-17B 18HP. The previous owner had it converted to remote control and removed the tiller arm, and the Gear and Shaft Assembly. I need the tiller. I just figured I’d remove one from one of my older 18’s and replace it. Don’t work that way, shaft is too short measuring only 8″, I need a longer shaft. Parts on MarineEngine says I need part number 377631, but all I see are measuring 8″ stating “short shaft”. Maybe there’s a different part number I should be looking for? Any ideas??? Thanks.

“Short” refers to the one in the steering bracket, “Long” refers to the one in the tiller. As near as I can figure out, the short one was 676692 in 1958 and 377631 starting around 1959-ish. All I can figure is the steering bracket must have changed with the advent of the fiberglass hood. Are you trying to put a pre-fiberglass in a fiberglass motor?

You caught me over-thinking this one. Trying to match-up apples and oranges. I need the 377631. Thank You

I happen to be disassembling an FD17. That 0377631 gear and shaft measures just under 8″. If you want this one PM me.

I sure appreciate that, however, I ordered one from eBay already. Thanks for the offer.
