Gentlemen,
I recently acquired a Sportwin 4421 at an antique flea market. It has compression (60 lbs. per cylinder), I was able to clean the points and I now have spark on both plugs. While the gas tank was gunked up, the carburetor looks pristine and the float bowl smells like carb cleaner. Looks like someone cleaned the carburetor but it hasn’t been run since.
I need to know what to do about lower unit lube and the water pump impeller. I assume the upper screw in this picture is a fill plug and the lower one is a drain, is this correct? In my modern mercury I would drain the lubricant out the bottom plug, and refill it from the bottom until the lube reached the top plug, is that how you lube the lower unit on this Sportwin? What lubricant is appropriate? Will the John Deere Cornhead Grease work?
I’ve read the water pump impellers on these engines are pretty much bomb-proof, is this true? Where is the water pump located and how do you get to it?
Anything else I should check before I try to start this for the first time?
Many Thanks,
RayFebruary 11, 2017 at 4:46 pm #52832I believe that lower unit takes SAE 90wt. hypoid oil. If the seals are bad use SKF 5523 and SKF 4770 seals. The water pump is in the section between the bottom of the driveshaft housing and the gear housing. Undoing the four screws will also give you access to the driveshaft seal and bearing. The water pump is a two stage centripical type. This parts list should help. . . 😀
February 11, 2017 at 6:04 pm #52834float made of cork I presume ……?
the sealant may have been damaged (stripped of sealant) by that carb cleaner you smell .. may have been…..
lots of discussions on float sealants on here …
personally I have used crazy glue ( 2-3 coats) in gel form available at Dollar stores will no apparent ill effects …yet
the big orange store has the real stuff "Gorilla glue" …. but I do not know if it is any better seeing I have had no problems…. yet .
or you can buy a new one of course and that is your 100% garante of a good float

Crosbyman to be honest I hadn’t thought about carb cleaner interacting with the float sealant, thanks for the heads up! I’ll check the sealant on the float and proceed accordingly. If you were to use Gorilla Glue to seal the float, which one would you use?

The chemical name for Krazy Glue is ethyl cyanoacrylate
