So I’m refurbishing the gear case assembly on my Fleetwin and noticed that the propeller shaft has some wear on it. Does anyone know how much wear these can have before the oil seal can no longer do its job? Thanks in advance.

Not sure there’s a definitive answer on your question, but by looking at my garage
floor, there needs to be less shaft wear than what’s on my Fleetwin.
Some times you can put a new seal in and seat it so it’s in a better spot
on the shaft, i.e., not in the wear groove.

Kind of a judgement call. Personally,, I think the old seals were more forgiving than today’s

I looked at it again last night and it seems there is slight groove right where the lip of the seal meets the shaft. I’ll think I’ll go ahead and buy a new shaft and be done with it rather than take a chance re-using what I’ve got. On a side note, can I get the “Spaghetti” sting gasket stuff at the FLAPs, or should I stick with the OMC / Sierra brand gaskets from the marine shops?

Get the spaghetti seal where you want, but here’s the specs I was told to use
              when ordering…..

              Buna O-ring .103 OD, 70 duro rubber

I got mine in bulk from Mcmaster.
They call it o-ring cord stock. 3/32? diameter, 70A durometer, Buna-N.
              Their part number 9407-K11

I did a Google search on Evinrude 303328, and Wal-Mart actually carries it through one of their vendors. Now I just got to score some 3M 847 sealer …

McMaster has the cord stock AND the 847 also. Their part number 7509A65
