      In finishing up my ’62 Johnson 5.5 hp, I wanted to remove the key to lap the flywheel to the crank taper. The key was in so tight that the usual methods of removal–tapping on one end to rotate it, prying it out with diagonal cutters, etc.–had no effect. There was little protrusion and no sign of the little upset marks that seem to be on OMC keys.

      So I gave up and just put it together. Is this usual?

      Also, no felt oiler(s) present on this magneto. I think there is supposed to be one (not two), and a clip held down by the coil mount screws. This does not bother me much as, in the days of cars with points, they usually did not have felt oilers and we greased the cam with a supposedly-special breaker cam grease. Opinions on this?

        Well, sometimes those keys can be a bugger to get out…They are just there to locate the flywheel, so I don’t think there will be an issue if properly torqued. The oiler wick should be used, but you will probably be OK if you applied a thin film of grease on the point cam…

          You can probably get away with a dab of grease on the cam / points rubbing blocks, but I prefer the oiler wick. You get a fresh oiler wick that is prelubricated with the proper amount of oil with every set of new OMC / BRP points. There is only one used at a time on the engine so you’ll have an extra wick with a full tune up kit.
