Does anyone have one of these for sale ,or can I borrow one from someone? I have heard that some people have been successful in mounting rare earth magnets in old flywheels. Anyone have any experience doing this? Thanks

I just saw you post. I have a flywheel magnet charger and have for close to 40 years.
I have learned that even though the pre war motors loose much of there magnetism over
time it doesn’t effect how a motor starts or runs. Most of the pre WW-II motors out there
have never had their magnets recharged and they start and run just fine. In the video
below I’m firing a old coil from a Bendix mag. I never recharged the tiny magnets in
that flywheel. In spite of the greatly reduced magnetism the coil works fine.
However if you want to ship me your flywheel I’ll be glad to charge the magnets for you.

.A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
October 12, 2023 at 12:14 am #281553For a short time I was almost convinced I needed a magnet recharge as well. One of our members asked me to do a test by putting a large, heavy screwdriver about an inch or so from my magnet. ( Sea King, magnets in the rotor, not the flywheel.) The test is will the magnet pull the screwdriver 3/4″ or more.
I did the test, then tested how far it would pull. If I remember right, I was able to move the screwdriver 1.25″ away!
Then I hung a bunch of tools from the magnet, no need for a recharge!
That said, for all I know you’ve already done all this and actually need a recharge.
Pics below are my experience, your mileage may vary.
Good luck,

I remember my father magnetizing his screwdriver tips just by rubbing them on a magnet a few minutes using a simple old style ” horse shoe ” magnet.
These rare earth magnet are so strong today they will bite a finger if not carefull . Some of them you can’t even pull them apart unless you slide them sideways.
these small ones (bars) are extremely strong and if you orient them correctly I would not be surprised to see them load up your fw like a charger.
Method 1: Using Another Magnet
To remagnetize a magnet using another magnet, follow these steps:
1. Choose a stronger magnet that is similar in size and shape to the magnet you want to remagnetize.
2. Place the weaker magnet near the stronger magnet, with the opposite poles facing each other.
3. Slowly move the weaker magnet towards the stronger magnet until they touch.
4. Hold the magnets together for a few seconds, then slowly separate them.
5. Repeat the process several times, gradually increasing the distance between the magnets.Joining AOMCI has priviledges 🙂
