I have a 57 Johnson 35HP RD19 that I can’t coax a spark out of after having replaced the coils, points, condensers, and plug wires. How to I determine if the flywheel magnet is sufficiently strong? Can it be remagnetized if weak? Flwheel shows signs of former heating and hammer blows.

February 29, 2024 at 7:27 pm #285418Make sure the eccentric screw is working. Some new points have a hole too large for it to work properly.

March 1, 2024 at 10:09 am #285426did you perform a resistance test between the plug boots and frame ground to confirm all is ok each coil should read between 4-8 kohms approx. depending on manufaturer
did you adjust timing per this video

condensers are tricky and may…. be bad even new ones . you can do a “basic” test for shorts or open but the real leak test is done with high voltage (250vdc +) if you have testing eqpt.
the western region AOMCI has excellent articles by m.Mohat
see articles 1-4 on condensers … how to test and fixes

March 1, 2024 at 9:54 pm #285445Disassembled everything today and started from scratch following Seloc Volume II from pp 5-5 through trouble shooting and final assembly pp 5-25. No fire yet. Have watched the video per crosbyman and will give that a whirl tomorrow. Condenser capacitance measures nominal but I am not equipped to test for high volt breakdown. Can try a change out for good measure as necesssary.
