I was wondering why did the flywheel sizes change in the post 1980’s 25/35hp motors?

Some have a larger diameter where the starter teeth protrude more, needing a smaller sized bendix to fit properly. It also complicates putting a compatible manual starter on the motor in examples where both electric and manual start is desired.

Even newer (say post ’92), you run into flywheels that are not as tall and cannot accept a manual starter at all.

Does the lighter (less tall, lower profile), newer flywheels give the motor less to work against when building inertia on accelerating/climbing the power curve?

I mean, the "newer" 25’s with the thru hub exhaust seem to have more power (as compared to the thru-hub late 80’s models). Cant help but notice they have more fuel recirculating hoses built in too…guessing to promote better economy…?
