Just how rare are the folding 3hp Evinrude Lightwins?
I’ve got a chance to buy one that appears to be in very nice cosmetic condition for $150 (a price much higher than I typically pay for motors).
Just curious.
DrifterJuly 11, 2015 at 2:00 pm #19851That seems fair to me if its in good shape. Does it have it’s case?
July 11, 2015 at 2:03 pm #19852If you are talking the 1960’s and 70’s versions in running condition they are higher then other motors since they still have a good following with fisherman. That price does not seem too high for a nice motor and they are small and reliable as anything out there if taken care of. Make for a nice backup motor.
July 11, 2015 at 2:34 pm #19857These engines are not that rare, although finding one with a good case is a bit tougher.
$150 is a great price for a folder in nice condition with a case.July 11, 2015 at 3:12 pm #19861A 60’s folder in good shape without the case usually go for $200 to $350 in our neck of the woods. One I looked at last year I wouldn’t have payed fifty dollars for. Besides being seized tight, it had missing and broken parts.

Here’s a folder with its case on C/L. You can be the judge weather it’s over priced or not.
July 11, 2015 at 3:28 pm #19864Of Corse condition is everything but if it is as you describe
I would agree with Mumbles evaluation.
It would disappear in 15 minuets at Tomahawk at that price and reappear
on the other side of the strip soon after asking $300.00.A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

There’s a super-swanky "rustic" resort in Ely, MN called Burntside Lodge. They have a vintage outboard display in the men’s restroom (which I think is awesome), including a very tidy Evinrude folder resting in its original case. It sits on the floor, in the corner, next to an equally tidy 50s Merc
July 11, 2015 at 11:23 pm #19895Heck, that beats looking a magazines in the pooper. 😛
As already mentioned, $150 is a fair price for one in good condition. Some years back a sold I couple on GBay for 2 to 3 hundred.July 12, 2015 at 9:26 pm #19967Well, I bought the 1966 folder for $100. It was indeed in very nice shape.
Thanks for the replies.July 12, 2015 at 9:31 pm #19968Great deal. Find yourself a case if it doesnt have one and you’ll have a good investment on your hands
