Got a 1995ish 4cyl 120hp merc Chrysler force with good compression, no spark. just none. on any cyl
I at first thought it was that I just didn’t understand the mercury 8 pin setup.. so here is what I’ve got hooked up:
pin 1) Black/yellow stripe UNHOOKED (this is the kill when shorted to ground??)
pin 2) Violet purple UNHOOKED (whatsitdo? I traced this violet wire to the overRev module #821889A48)
pin 3) Tan/light blue UNHOOKED (alarm buzzer?)
pin 4) Black-ground HOOKEDUP to black battery terminal
pin 5) Grey – tach UNHOOKED
pin 6) Yellow/w black stripe choke UNHOOKED
pin 7) Yellow/red stripe I cross this to run the starter
pin 8) RED primary HOOKED TO BATTERY positiveI get motor spin, but no spark. is there anything else I absolutely need to have hooked up other than #pin4 and pin8??
other info:
I have tried disconnecting the violet, brown, and black+yellow from the rev-limiter.. no help
Stator test shows 650ohm from green+whiteStripe to white+greenstripe
I tested the trigger one circuit (Purp-to-white shows the correct 840 ohms, the other white+blackStripe -to- greyBrown shows 32MegaOhms so clearly one of the windings in the trigger is bad… so that’s a issue.. but regardless I should get 2 of the 4 cyls spark at least???)amazingly Im the guy who SHOULD know all this since Ive worked on these components so many times.. this one has be buggered.
November 1, 2023 at 12:23 am #282190For the record I was able to confirm electrically that these motors are controlled essentially by two wires: the yellow wire with red stripe (which hits the starter solenoid) and the black wire with yellow stripe (which grounds out the spark plugs).. that’s all you really have to have to startup.
Now… this is the craziest thing I can imagine.. because if for whatever reason the black with yellow stripe wire is cut or the key switches are compromised (or even the wire corrodes in half) you will have a runaway engine
I advise everyone to have a plan as to how to stop their motor other than the conventional way.. my personal plan is to pull the quick connects off of the front of the coils.
