Thanks Tubs for the reply! I didn’t realize I had to be on the reply screen to see the "Private Message" spot. I agree with your comments and they boosted my confidence greatly. You have also greatly helped me to use this website more efficently! Thanks again!
June 28, 2017 at 3:02 pm #60534quote Jerry Ahrens:I Gas stabilizer is added each fall for storage, along with the usual fogging of the engine. You said he uses stabilizer but I’ve found most people just don’t understand Stabilizer. Two commonly misunderstood stabilizer items:
1. If the carb can’t be drained or run dry (as in that 454) once stabilizer is in the gas, the motor has to be run long enough so the stabilized fuel gets to the carb, replacing the non-stabilized fuel.
2. Most stabilizers out there stabilize gasoline, but NOT the ethanol in it. Most common stabilizer where I live is "Sta-Bil". It does nothing for ethanol unless you seek out their "Sta-Bil-Ethanol" product that almost nobody in Minnesota stocks. The other option in that brand is "Sta-Bil-Marine". With a phone call to the company, I learned Sta-Bil-Marine has twice as much of the ethanol stabilizer additive than is found in Sta-Bil-Ethanol.
I don’t understand why Sta-Bil company even sells the non-ethanol Sta-Bil here in Minnesota where just about all gasoline except for premium in a select few stations, has 10% ethanol.
My neighbor’s Ski Nautique boat had a carb looking like your photo the one year they ran 10% ethanol gas in it and they had a devil of a time getting all the phase-separated stuff out of the tank.

June 28, 2017 at 5:25 pm #60541I totally agree with running ethanol free whenever possible. I have some product given to me by Mercury at a boat show that is supposed to stabilize ethanol, so far I have not needed it. Jerry, I worked on my neighbors Evinrude 4hp that had phase separation. Very nasty stuff! As hard to clean it out of this little motor, I can’t imagine how much work it would be to clean it out of an onboard tank. 🙄 We did run one 6 gallon can of 10% so far this year, as we ran out of e-free and Kevin was heading to the lake with friends. We only ran it in the 800, and used it up last week. I now have about 18 gallons of good 91 octane e-free that will keep me or the next month. (We ran about 24 gallons on vacation last week.)

June 28, 2017 at 8:38 pm #60551I added CRC stabilizer to the fuel in this particular boat, last October. Just the regular stuff. In addition to pouring it in the fuel tank, I also ad several drops of the stabilizer into the carb bowl vent tube, right before I’m ready to fog the engine. That way, it goes to work instantly in the carb passages. I just wanted to share this story, and show the pics of this carburetor, as I’ve never seen one quite like this before. I wished I would have taken a few pics of the old gas before it went to the recyclers waste oil tank. he likes a little old gas mixed with the waste oil…. he saye’s it burns better in his waste oil furnace. I’ts a good thing, cause disposing of old gasoline is very expensive. Safety Clean will pick it up in special containers, but it aint cheap. At least that’s they way it was a few years back.
June 28, 2017 at 10:55 pm #60563My county has a free hazardous waste disposal day once a year and they do take old gas. I keep some to get fires started when I get enough tree branches to burn every couple of years.
