Good ol Minnesota, that time of year. I always drain my 3 & 6 gallon fuel tanks empty before winter, so I have clean tanks ready for spring. Question is, what does a person use inside tank to keep it from rusting, for the 6 months it sits empty.?                Gene.

Coat it with oil and dump any extra out in the spring before use.

Also Mister Necks, store your cans inside cover them up too.   Condensation is the enemy here, metal cans sweat when the humidity goes up and down.    Best storage would be inside a controlled temperature and humidity environment.    I fella I know has a pontoon boat.    The boat has a spot for gas cans on the back of each sponson.   The entire outfit sets outside all the time.  Every spring I hear him holler’n about alcohol gas.  His tanks have water in them.   I wonder where some of that foot of snow and ice went that was built up on your tanks?  I ask him?  Most fuel tanks have a vent and water will get in eventually.  Pressure tanks can leach water through the pump button.  JMHO

I put the amount of oil in it that will be needed to fill it up. Swirl it around. Don’t think it breaks down. Then your good to go on next trip.

I get every single drop of gas out, swirl some two stroke oil around on the bottom and, if the tank is in real nice shape, I will sneak it by my wife and hide it in the warm basement.

              Long live American manufacturing!

Thanks guys for all your ideas, sounds like a little of 2 cycle oil to cover bottom of tank, swirled around, would be the way to go. I’ve heard people using WD-40, and other aerosols, spraying inside of tanks, never heard any results. I can see a climate controlled place to store fuel tanks would be a plus.
