I recall reading that marine grade gear oil should be used. The non-marine tends to build up more vapor pressure. At least that’s my recollection.

You make a great point indeed!  I never gave any thought to vapor pressure issues.  Needless to say, excess vapor pressure could overcome seals/orings/gaskets ability to seal.

Aside from the viscosity, I believe the more complex gearcase lubes need additives. That is, the larger gear (for cooling) and complex (for helical gears) oils require long-chain and low shear additives.

It has been said that GL5-rated gear lubes will “attack yellow metals,” which there is often a lot of, in OMC lower units. Sometimes I have run into OMC units that have had very severe wear to these bushings/bearings and I wonder whether that had anything to do with it, or not.

Thanks to all for your inputs….$25 it is …..but like many things in the last 2 years  I just felt abusive pricing  is creeping up is everywhere and  possibly unjustiable.

the petroleum industry profits seems to support the trend 🙁
