I have a 1958 Gale Buccaneer 35 HP that I bought a fuel pump kit for. I assumed it was the same pump used on the 1958 Johnson Super Sea Horse RDS-20, and ordered OMC # 0379777 fuel pump repair kit. I should have looked at the motor first.

The fuel pump is different – the filter bowl (with sintered filter) is not part of the pump – the pump is mounted just below the filter bowl assembly and gets it’s impulses from the port cover behind instead of a hose from the crankcase. It looks like it is getting impulses from the exhaust port. The diaphragm in the pump is different shape and holes from the kit, and has a metal disk riveted in the center.

What do I order to rebuild this Gale fuel pump?

They haven’t made parts for that pump for 40 years. Order a Sierra Marine 18-7351 and mount it on the upper cover. Swap the upper and lower covers. You can do away with the glass filter. The pump has a filter screen behind the inlet.

Ok – I must have been brain dead when I wrote that last post – Of course the fuel pump does not work from the exhaust port – but when I took the pump apart, it looked like soot inside the pump on that side of the diaphragm, but I think it was just fine powdered black stuff that came off the diaphragm over time.

Upon further examination, all the pump parts look fine, but I put a finger on one side of the filter and tried to blow through it and it was difficult, so I think I found my fuel-starvation after 5 seconds at WOT problem. I will try it on the lake tomorrow with no filter, as I don’t have another one here. I’ll order a filter.

Frank – thanks for the info about the 18-7351 pump – I’ll order one if I still have fuel starvation problems. I’ve already swapped tanks and gaslines with ones that work fine on a 40 HP on another boat.
          Thx,
          Dave
