Hey friends, I have a 1957 5.5HP Johnson SeaHorse outboard my Cousin gave me, belonged to my Uncle, Can anyone tell me what the gas/oil ratio is? I saw something that said pre 1966 its 22:1 is that correct? Just making sure. Thank you.

16:1 for sure.  Ignore all the hype about “today’s oils being so much better, you need less” on this engine.  This engine has “plain bronze” rod bearings that require alot of lubrication.  If the rods don’t get the lube they crave, you will end up pitching a rod probably through the side of the block.   The great thing about these engines is when they are in good tune, they hardly smoke at all, even at 16:1

1/2 pint of oil for each gallon of gas, or 16 to 1.  This is also true of most OMC engines from the 40’s and 50’s.   My 1955 Johnson 5.5 takes a 16:1 per the cowling instructions, and I would think that this would also be true of the ’57.  Running a lean oil mixture will cause more damage to the motor than the lack of smoke will benefit.

My ’55 had Champion J6C spark plugs on it, which is around 0.02 to 0.03 inch gap.

Yes – Gap plugs at .030, and points at .020.
