I use Evinrude Johnson HI-VIS gearcase lubricant, part number 775603. The directions call for its use on 1973 and newer engines. Does anyone have any experience using this product on OMC engines older than 1973? Is there any harm? Is there a better choice for the older motors?
I used to buy Hi-Vis by the pail when I could get it and used it in all my post war non electric shift motors requiring oil in the gearcase. Since I can’t get it anymore, I now use name brand marine rated gear oil from my auto supply or Canadian Tire. It’s probably all the same stuff but the packaging is different.
There is no harm in using Hi-Vis in older mechanical shift gearcases, it makes perfect sense. But, you still must use premium blend and any electric or hydro-electric shift gearcase. OMC probably published this recommendation out of pure simplicity. 1972 was the last year hydro-electric gearcases were used in outboards, so it was easier/more clear/less confusing to just recommend using type C/premium blend in outboard 72 and older.
I use Sierra Premium gear oil (Synthetic Blend) in all gearcases except electric shift or old ones that need thick grease. I buy it in a 5 gallon pail. Price is right for how much you get! Approx $135 for 5 gallons at Amazon and other places. That’s $6.75/quart. Compare that to around $20 a quart for OEM gear oil.
