In a previous thread (https://aomci.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11986)it was determined that the shifting problem on my old Chrysler was due to a broken roll pin in the gear handle. This was definitely the case, however when I fixed that, the handle worked but was really, really stiff, and when I reattached the lower unit and connected the shift rods, it was too much for a little roll pin and it broke. And then again when I didn’t even have the lower unit on any more, I think it was just a slightly crappier roll pin.
I am reasonably sure that the gear handle shouldn’t be this hard to move. Even with the shift rod disconnected from the lower unit so all it’s doing is moving the rod a bit, the handle is really hard to move, especially into reverse. It’s been like that since I got it (engine had been lying around for about 10 years unused) and I thought once I sprayed WD40 everywhere it would loosen up, but it hasn’t, if anything the WD40 reduced the friction between the handle and the shaft so the pins break easier. 😥
Help? The original pin was solid, not a roll pin. I think a roll pin just isn’t strong enough for what it’s doing there. What can I use instead? And how can I make the whole thing work more smoothly?
