      Hi,

I have an 1964 18hp Evinrude Fastwin and I am replacing the seals, impeller, etc in the lower unit It has a gear case head assembly, looks like a small can with a brass bushing. My question. Are there gears in it, or is it pretty mach a ‘passive’ unit? A new one is $167.00, is it supposed to turn /spin? or does the shaft just pass through it? How do you know if it’s good or bad?

      Thanks, Tom

No gears in the head – just a seal. The propshaft passes through it. It doesn’t turn or spin.

Do you have the replacement seal? It is part number 302545, replaced by 313284. About ten bucks.

There are no gears in this piece and it does not spin as mentioned before. What it does contain besides a pocket for the prop shaft seal is the bronze prop shaft bearing. It is an important piece and I would not classify it as "passive" myself. If the bearing is worn out or scored, it will accelerate wear of the rest of the gearcase components. That said, I know most of us don’t put tons of hours on these things every year and one in marginal condition will still allow you to enjoy a motor that would not otherwise be run and enjoyed at all.
