Values vary around the country due to supply and demand.  I have a Golden Javelin.  They were only gold in 1957.  If the motor can be demonstrated running, even in a barrel, here in Minnesota where there are a lot of similar motors,   I would say $175 to $250 running OK and pumping water in the condition you mentioned, with no cracks in the exhaust housing or gearcase.  If you can’t see it run, I’d say $50 to $100.  Keep in mind that not running, a lot of motors like that one can need a carb kit, impeller, condensers, coils, gearcase seal kit, etc, and this can add up to over $200 just in parts; and there could be hidden gremlins inside that are more serious.   If the wiring harness, starter solenoid box, and remote start and choke buttons with wires are all there, it’s worth another $50 to $75.   A good , working pressurized dual line fuel tank is worth another $75 to $100.  If the tank needs rebuilding and new lines,  it’s only worth about $30 if not rusty inside.  If the remote throttle and shift box is there, that worth another $50, and know that the cable length will probably not be right for you, so you have to buy new throttle and shift cables.  If the black, snap-on cover that hides the recoil starter pull handle is there, that’s a plus – a lot of them have been lost or tossed over time.  Beware of any “ran good last time out a few years ago” comments – that’s the biggest joke in the hobby!  I found out that the hard way on a couple motors I bought years ago.  Just curious – are you buying or selling?

          Selling

Found it in the barn of some collectors when they died

Was going to put it on my 1954 crestliner but just haven’t had time , bad back too. Besides, I’d love to put twins on the crestliner.

Any idea what a set of twin controls for the omc would go for?

          Looking to buy

Twin 35s will put almost 300 pounds on the back of the boat, plus another fuel tank, and while the transom is probably strong enough, the weight can mess up handling.  Which 1954 Crestliner model do you have?

I am planning to put twins on a 1958  Crestliner Viking14, but I’ll start with 15 HP Evinrudes from the mid 1950s.  I am in the process of making two good ones out of four. I’d start with 18s but only have one right now.   It likely won’t win any races, but twins are cool.  Once it is set up for OMC twins, I can put on other HPs because the remote hookups are the same, and may put a couple 1950s/1960s  33s, 35s, or 40s on it briefly, just because I have them and I can.  The Viking, with no aft side decks , has a much wider transom for twins than the Voyagers.  I  may have to build a splashwell so I don’t have to come off plane slowly to avoid taking the wake over the transom and into the boat as I slow down.   I also have a 1957 Voyager14 that has the same hull and a splashwell, but the aft side decking back there makes the transom too narrow for most dual motor setups, and space for the cable/pulley steering hardware is very limited, so turning range would be severely limited,  Maybe the thinner Mercurys would fit but I’m not into those.

I found a set of dual OMC remote controls on Craigslist (or maybe it was facebook marketplace) , a couple years ago for $100.  The cables are likely the wrong length, so I’ll probably have to buy new cables.  I will make up the dual cable and pulley steering rigging for the motors myself.

I’d like to see you post a photo or two of your dual setup when you complete it.   I won’t get to finishing mine until next summer.

It’s a viking. Was rated for twin 35s

Gas will be up front under bow but need the controls.

The twins still weigh 50# less than a fat 50.

I have a 50 horse 3 cylinder from the 70s but a cowl swap to make it look good is still somewhat involved

But going one of those 2 directions. Right now it’s a 28 super seahorse, just not enough oomph. Want it to do 40-45 on three top end, so more power different props. Boat raced on Snake River back in the 50s with a fat 50.

                  Thanks!

40-45 MPH will need significant HP.   When I was a teenager in the 1960s, Dad had a 1958 Voyager14 (same hull as the viking14, but with a splashwell), and in 1965, he put a V4 60 HP Johnson on it (photo below).  The weight screwed up handling some.  With a 12 inch  pitch prop, and the trim pin all the way up (which caused cavitation on turns and took a bit of time to plane off)  and me alone in the boat at 150 pounds, top speed was 41 MPH.  With that combination, it struggled to pull a skier out of the water, but once up, at a top speed of about 38, I was able to step off a ski and barely stay up skiing barefoot after dragging the boat down to about 34.  Two 35s would be roughly equivalent to that one 60 HP, but plane off faster and use more fuel.  An 11 inch prop, had a top speed of 38 with the trim pin all the way up, but was a better prop for all around use at trim pin one notch below top.   For best all around use and handling, the 40 HP Johnson we had for a few years before that was a better combination for that boat, and what I run now on my Voyager14.

My bad. Mine is also a Voyager!

I would appreciate your advice as far as the power train. So scrap the twin idea. I talked to you awhile back but life happened. I still have the boat though and can work on it again.

Our lake has over 100 miles of shoreline so I’m not very happy with the 28 super seahorse that is on it.

Funny thing: sold the javelin for 225 today and a 40 just popped up. Would I do well to pop for that or should I try to use a 50hp 3 cylinder Evinrude? I could maybe manage a cowl swap so it looks old. I already own the loop charged motor.

Best part about the Javelin is I picked it up for 20 bucks!

Anyway, I  will listen and take your advice as you have years of experience with exactly what I am working on.  And you know what I’d like as far as the top end. 40 would probably feel pretty fast anyway. And evidently you’re still at it!

Thank you so much, I’m glad to have reconnected! Have a great day!
