Just purchased a 1957 Evinrude big twin 35 hp electric start. After cleaning the blue paint off the ID tag, it turns out to be a Johnson RJE-19 with an Evinrude hood and most likely Evinrude powerhead.
Powerhead is painted blue with some bits that are white. Everything below the powerhead is painted blue over white. Recommendations, do I try to restore it as a Javelin or, make it presentable and just use it?

Well, it’s ultimately your choice. Personally, I’m always a proponent of full restorations so if it were mine, and I had the chance to have a Golden Javelin in my collection, no doubt I would put it back to it’s original Javelin style. Great find!!

To restore, it would need the correct hood and trim plus the Johnson starter and generator brackets. Not sure if the cost would be worth it. Just went out and scraped some paint on the powerhead and found white under the blue, also some bronze. So it appears that the powerhead is most likely the original.

Yes, you would need the correct hood and brackets. You could see if you could locate those first and see what the cost would be before deciding on how to proceed. Might be hard to find a cowl for sale by itself – you might be able to find a Javelin parts motor somewhere. I had a chance last year to pick up a Javelin that had a stuck powerhead and bad gearcase and decided to pass on it, but wish now I’d bought it just for the cowl and other parts.

It won’t cost anything to look around for the parts you need and knowing there’s a Javelin under all that blue paint, I’d be all over it!

I have twin Javelins on my Alumacraft Super CS. I think I have an additional cowl in my pole barn. Where are you located?

Lloyd, I’m in east central Minnesota, Mora MN to be precise. If you have a spare cowl I’d be happy to buy it. I am not familiar with the CS model, mine is the FDR model.
