The 40 horse is an early 60s electrashift. Is that going to make for potential problems?
Thanks!
Did you get the remote control box for your electric shift? The motor is useless without it.
The electric shift has a sleeker gearcase that may give you 1 or 2 additional MPH due to less water-resistance.
I’m told that the electric shift gearcase is not very tolerant of small amounts of water leaking in.
Electric shift gear oil must be Type C, but aftermarket companies, such as Sierra Marine, make type C.
I’ve heard that parts availability for those old electric shift motors is limited, but don’t know for sure. Somebody out there likely has parts. I have an electric shift 40 long shaft I got with a group of 5 motors, but some parts are missing so I will probably never use it and don’t have the remote control.
My next door neighbor has a 1965 electric shift 40 long shaft he got a couple years ago and never used that he was “told” will run – it does not have the remote control box, but has the wiring harness coming out of the motor. He told me recently his plans have changed, and he will give it free to anyone who wants to come get it – It’s in Minnesota if you are interested.
OK – That’s all I know about electric shift. Others here should know more.
The 3 cyl 55 HP you mentioned will be faster than the 40, and may use less gas. I only go to 40 HP in my collection, so don’t know much about the 3 cyl models.
Others here may have some more insight with pros and cons to suggest.
