Hi,
I’ve been working with a PDF I got from WaterCraftManuals.com. Does anyone have a Searchable version they’re willing to share?
I have an old laptop that runs Ubuntu Linux. I can’t find software to make my PDF searchable. I think folks with Windows and Adobe can convert a PDF to a searchable version.
I don’t think there are any copyright issues since I paid my $20 for my watermarked version. Anybody with this manual knows it’s around 600 pages long, and it can be tough to find what you’re looking for. Maybe some day I’ll blow through an ink cartridge and print mine, but Geeesh!
Thanks!

I had mine printed double sided and spring bound with plastic cover sheets for protection. The main front page on book #1 was duplicated and used on the second binder just for appearance reasons.
Did not cost that much for 2 flat laying books easy to read … easier than scrolling on a PC or laptop . You can had tab separators on the 5-6 main sections and…sub-sections if you like. ex: Carburators…. TN…CD…AD…QD…FD…RD etc… same for magneto section etc…

I’d still like a searchable PDF for when I want to find a paragraph to email my friend. Funny fact, I started this outboard motor hobby but don’t have a boat! I can use my friend’s small aluminum boat whenever I want, so he provides the boat and trailer and I provide the power. LOL His wife hates having the boat in their driveway, even though it has it’s own spot off to the side. So at least for the summer, the boat lives at my house. Lucky me!

May 11, 2025 at 7:12 am #296336If you have a PDF now that has clear text you can use one of the on-line sites that do a free OCR conversion. Just Google that. Sites like smallpdf.com .
The results vary; give it a try. The file size will increase big-time….but for use on your computer it won’t really matter.
EDIT: I just re-read your post and noticed the part about Linux. Maybe the conversion won’t work for you but I will leave the post here figuring it might help someone else.

Google search “can I make pdf searchable” – https://shorturl.at/n5QRd
How to search for a word or phrase in a PDF in Ubuntu – https://en.ubunlog.com/search-pdf/
There are various online OCR tools like http://www.pdf2go.com that allow you to upload your PDF and convert it to a searchable format. I’ve used this before and it works. It finds the words on the page but doesn’t highlight them. The large Service Manual may take 20-25 min. to convert. https://www.pdf2go.com/

May 19, 2025 at 1:00 am #296548Just look on eBay for a Johnson shop manual tenth edition. You can pick them up on there at times for $25 to $40 dollars. I have bought several there for that money.
