Ok. Will do. I was hoping it would be easy I guess. LOL
This sort of sounds like dealing with the ignition on a 74-76 9.9/15 where nothing is obviously wrong but it still won’t work. The bane of my outboard existence.
June 5, 2016 at 10:49 pm #37739I removed everything from the magplate and cleaned it up. Sanded every connector shiny and reassembled everything. I did maybe shortcut a bit on the plug wires as I didn’t replace them because they were soldered and the insulation seemed in really good shape. I cut the last 1/2 off and reinserted the connectors. We have spark!
Reassembly time.

Carb is leaking pretty bad. I didn’t have time to investigate the leak(s) but they are significant.
Still pretty excited. This thing was nasty.
June 6, 2016 at 9:02 pm #37792The carb leak my just lack of knowledge on my part. The float pin was not lined up properly. Just FYI, that makes gas really leak bad.
Two more questions.
Water is squirting from the tell tale pretty good but it seems to be heating up pretty fast. My thermometer shows temps in the high 170s. Do these motors run hotter than normal?
Other than the 4 bolts on the leg, is there anything else I have to disconnect to drop the LU? I have no idea in which decade it last had an impeller.
June 7, 2016 at 2:24 am #37809These motors don’t run hotter than normal. It is possible that some of the water passages are blocked, but let’s go with the worn impeller first.
You need to loosen the neutral cable at the handle on the top of the motor. Try not to pull it all the way through as it can be a pain to thread back. You’ll be able to then pull the plate out of the way and access the impeller. The edges of the plate are pretty sharp, so be careful.
June 7, 2016 at 6:04 am #37818I would bet a bad impeller, myself. You’re more likely to find a bad impeller in one of the old TN’s than any of the later motors, because they’re not as simple to replace. The star impellers on the TN, is a huge improvement over the earlier TD waterpump.
The tell tales on those motors are not really a correct form, anyhow, because on these, the water squirts out there, before it goes into the engine. You really don’t want any water loss, before the water goes through the engine and these do just that.
A correct tell tale should actually show some of the discharged water, so you’ll know it’s went through the block. On a lot of the other motors, a correct tell tale is piped off of the top of the block, not the bottom.June 7, 2016 at 11:38 am #37821quote 1946Zephyr:I would bet a bad impeller, myself. Taking this into consideration I must have some blocked passages as the water exiting the tell tale is so hot as to be uncomfortable when it hits my skin. Any recommendations besides water and compressed air as a way to move things that might be stuck? I guess having the exposed tubes at the top gives me a little better access than trying to push water in from the bottom.
June 7, 2016 at 12:17 pm #37822I wouldn’t read blocked passages into what Zephyr wrote. The water on my TN gets hot to the touch also.
June 7, 2016 at 1:58 pm #37827Ok. Maybe I am reading too much into it. I just assumed if the water at the tell tale is hot and it hasn’t entered the engine yet it must be backing up somewhat.
I have a new impeller on the way. When I replace it I will check to see that water circulates ok.
