disregard block, pan, or manual starter color. Because only the block is original. Last year’s project I’m getting ready to finally complete.

My money is on an early 70’s 18hp.

OK, I’ll bite. Well the top arrow points out the the throttle cam/mag plate is way out of position, no way the engine runs like this. And yes, looks like the block is some sort of Frankenstein setup, a later model engine on the older midsection. There are two fuel pump bypass covers, and the recirc hose should be connected to the top cylinder.
This is what happens when we mix and match stuff, nice coat of paint on the powerhead though!

Isn’t it odd that the bypass covers are for both/either/or/ fuel pump and recirc hose? I’m having trouble placing that.

Perhaps someone drilled that cover and installed the nipple, too bad they put it on the wrong cylinder.

I’ll take a look to see what the original block color is. If it is Johnson white, well, that means it’s either an early 60’s 18hp FD, or a late 60’s 20hp (which I haven’t seen many white 20hp motors but know they do still float around here and there).

With that fuel recirculator hose, that tells me it has to be late 60’s/early 70’s, even if in the wrong place. I’ll take a look at some other motors I have for comparisons and report back with findings. It’ll all get put back together the right way once I’m done.

The reason why I pointed out the timing plate on the magneto is because those ‘arc’ type ones seem to be only on the 18/20’s, the 25’s of course have that sharp angle at the top end to get some more RPM’s. So I doubt it’s a 25. I’m pretty sure the magneto/flywheel are all original to the powerhead.

well closer inspection, after removing the starboard bracket, shows evinrude light metallic blue, so that confirms my suspicions that this is a late 60’s/early 70’s 18hp. I guess it’ll stay white for now, but at least I know which carb to strap to it now!

Top arrow looks to be pointing to the throttle advance cam that has been pushed around.
Middle arrow points to a Fuel pump attach point (usually on the bottom)
Lower arrow points to the manifold drain found on the 70’s models.
