Does anyone know the tightening torque required for a 1940 Elto Handitwin flywheel nut?
Thank you.April 16, 2017 at 2:29 pm #56174I am just finishing mine off with new rings etc. Generally a 3/8" size screw (16-24 thds.) would be 18-20 ft lbs. The fly Wheel nut on 3hp Evinrude/Johnson take 30-40 ft lbs of Torque. On our Handitwin models having 7/16" size in a 20 threads per inch, I would feel very comfortable putting it at 25-30 ft lbs, but leaning more to the 30 lb side. Now you also have to consider if the Fly Wheel has been taken off the wrong way before and became egg shaped, than I would apply more or get another fly wheel. Good Luck with your unit.

To get the torque wrench onto the flywheel nut I machined out/filed a hex nut to fit the nut flats and end radius. Have not tried to start it yet. If it runs well I will probably replace the muffler which was apparently dropped and cracked the casting. I like the looks and simplicity of this motor. 🙂 Good luck with yours also.
April 16, 2017 at 3:05 pm #56177I liked the looks to. As you say; it has a lot of simplicity, but well thought out design. The small tank and curved just enough to fit nicely around the unit, and I can throw this unit on my shoulder during a portage lake I like for speckled trout.
April 16, 2017 at 5:10 pm #56191The Elto Handitwin would be the same as the Evinrude Sportwin. . . 😀

April 16, 2017 at 5:20 pm #56193Garry, I already had those number from years ago when you posted, but the fly wheel on these units are very much smaller than my later year Sportwin? Sorry Garry, was looking at the later years list 1st, than the earlier list. I’m happy with my number
April 16, 2017 at 5:36 pm #56194P.S. I use a crowfoot socket on those flat sided nuts. Turn it 90 degrees counter clockwise so pulling on the handle to tighten the nut holds the crowfoot against the nut. Turned that way does not change the length so no torque calculations are necessary. . . 😉

April 16, 2017 at 5:42 pm #56196The earlier Sportwin is listed BELOW the later Sportwin on my list. – 25 foot pounds is correct . . . 🙄
