Need to know,if I did this right…
September 23, 2015 at 10:53 pm #24469Wow, what a task pulling the flywheel was. Tried the pry and hit shaft with a mallot method, no go. Put a puller on it and cranked it as hard as I dare. Whacked it with a hammer on the shaft, no go. Left it with tension on the puller overnight and tried again on day two, no go. I finally cranked the puller with a cheater bar using force that common sense would say is a bad idea. Smacked,it with a hammer and POP! it came off. Phew!!! What a relief. It looks like it hasn’t seen daylight since FDR was in office. I now will have access to the underside when I need it and that is huge. I coated it with neversieze to be sure it comes off next time.
On to my questions, there appears to be a coating (not spray paint) on the flywheel and the ignition plate and parts. Is that factory?
The points are supposed to be set to .020 from what I have read. They looked to be at .015 or even .010. I filed them, set em to .020 and lubed the felt wick oiler thing with mineral oil. As I turned the shaft they close at one point (when they fire?). Is it critical that they be set to .020, or as long as they are open would it work?September 23, 2015 at 10:59 pm #24470September 24, 2015 at 12:12 am #24475Keep the points set at the required 0.020" as anything different will affect the ignition timing. Some mags have a greenish color coating and I believe Garry said it was a fungicide. Your black coating looks original and was probably meant to protect everything from moisture.
You put never seize on the flywheel taper? No! Take it off and clean the flywheel and crank tapers really good as they have to go together dry! Any oil or grease here is asking for trouble as the flywheel will break loose and shear the key! Guaranteed!
September 24, 2015 at 12:53 am #24476I was always told not to put grease or anything else. Im just curious as to why cant put anything on it ? I was thinking maybe not a tight secure fit ??
September 24, 2015 at 1:08 am #24477Copy that Mumbles, neversieze will be removed. Prolly should size up a key while I am in there. Thx!
September 24, 2015 at 1:11 am #24478While I am asking, should the advance lever be in any particular spot when setting this? I had it in the middle, maybe that would affect the gap?
September 24, 2015 at 4:11 am #24492The magneto handle can be anywhere as long as the points are not in the the flat spot where the magneto fires. That gives you 300+ degrees to play with. Oil on the crank taper can make it slide down too far. It sometimes causes the hub to crack at the key way.
