my 9.5 is real hard to start
choking doesn’t do it (choke plate does close properly)
these low boys are real low and the recoil starter is a pain to pull. anyway … a small skirt of fuel in the carb grid does it all the time.
starts right up trolls smooth and runs all day no issues …even restarts kind of easy when warmed up .
coils points condensers impeller all new
any suggestions ? thanks

September 6, 2016 at 3:51 am #43404make sure you have no air leaks at your carburetor. When the fuel system is right, it should be between 1/3rd to 1 turn out on the low speed needle, depending on which needle you have. Some versions have a slow taper, longer point, others are a fast taper, shorter point. More turns out means you have something wrong.
These 9.5’s need to have absolutely 100% clean jets or they won’t work right!
It should start on the 3rd pull, sometimes 2nd, when cold and dry. 1-2 pulls to get fuel into the motor, 3rd pull ignites it. If you’re missing the o-ring/packing on the low speed jet, the motor will be a hard start!
September 6, 2016 at 4:06 am #43405OK, you say the engine idles and runs great once started, and restarts fine hot….So, sure doesn’t seem like there are any engine issues…
So, to me, that choke is not working correctly. You say the choke is closing completely, but is it staying closed while you crank the engine? Sometimes the choke linkage gets jiggled about in that engine pan, especially if the mounts are weak. I would try manual holding that choke closed while an assistant cranks the engine.September 6, 2016 at 4:56 am #43407Make sure the throttle butterfly is opening at the right time on the cam.
September 6, 2016 at 2:26 pm #43426ok will check a few things out
compression was ok last I checked but those 9.5 do not realy hign compression anyway. motor runs great .thanks all
