I ran a 20 conversion on one I had in the late 70s. Worked ok.

My take on hydroplane HP is that as long as it can take the weight of the motor, and the transom can stand the stress; it depends on how close to the edge you dare to be.
          Have fun!

            Class A – B motors are fine.

I totally agree with Dave that motor weight is the key. On a Wetback I think about 100 lbs. of motor is the absolute limit. Use a short drive shaft housing to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Volumes have been written about the relationship of the prop and prop shaft to the bottom of the boat. A lot of it depends on what you have for a prop.

              "Fox News" isn't.

Thank you much for your reply
I’m sorta fishing to see if a 10 Merc would power that 9’8” wetback with my 9 year old Granddaughter.

what yr would it be. the best would be a green tank super ten. a full gear shift would be OK especially to start with. not as fast .

It’s 30 years old. Runs like a wrist watch and starts 1/2 pull every time.

should be fun for him. work on props and engine height . start with cav. plate even and parallel with the bottom.
put a safety shutoff switch on for sure.

My friend thanks for all that. That Wetback will be solid as a rock. Defiantly getting a safety kill switch. Intend to use a jack plate for up and down fine adjustments. Just hope it’s not too underpowered?
