I already posted my reasoning in dockside chat…But in regards to the name issue, I think by the standards of most people, what we call “classics” are “Antique” in their mind( and “antique” probably also applies to 70s, which is more “New” then most outboards discussed here), so the name is OK.  free motors to non-members to introduce them through good memories, membership discounts for new members, and more public outreach are all good ideas for increasing membership.  Most of us have more motors than we will ever use, and getting rid of “That second beat-up postwar 3.5 horse elgin on the rack” won’t hurt much when there are much bigger fish in the antique Outboard world.

Free motors to non-members is an excellent idea !

Advertise your next meet, invite the public (free outboard motor !) and give away motors along with an application form. Ask for nothing

in return. Sure, the fine print says “repairable” but I’ve got stuff that almost runs that I would gladly donate to such a worthy cause.

            Good idea Waunnaboat !

There are free parts and motors every year at Tomahawk on the “Free pile”  You are encouraged to make a donation to the club, but it is not required.

I’m aware of the parts pile, but the motors in the pile would be harder to fix for people who are not into outboards already.  already(somewhat OK) running motors are more likely to give people a good experience because they could use them for fishing, cruising, etc… without too many problems.  A motor that is stuck and/or is lacking in spark would get really annoying if you did not know what to do to get it to run.  Just seeing a few motors under 20 that run at last tomahawk, I wonder how much it would really hurt one to just give it away to somebody to increase the membership.  In the long run, it would probably actually be financially feasible because more people in the hobby would drive up prices a bit and then old members could counter for whatever loss was made by giving away an elgin or zephers or something of the like.  I’ve practically given away a couple of fixable motors that did not fit in my collection as part of other trades to people who are just getting into the hobby, and I’ve only been in the hobby for 1 year, 1 month, and 7 days.

Also, offering free antique outboard cruises to the public could be a good idea.  Many people do not know what the hobby entails, but I doubt that few would pass up a ride in a boat powered by an outboard.  That would be very easy since most of us love to talk about our outboards and show them off anyway.
