I bought a 1958 Evinrude 5.5hp Fisherman. Paid very little, as was told was only a parts motor. The previous owner had it at the dealer and they said it could not be fixed.
Well decided to look into it myself before tearing it apart.
Had great compression for a 5.5hp, just over 90 psi per hole.
Had spark. But pulled flywheel anyways. The mag plate had a bit of slop to it, so need to rebuild the support plate, but also noticed the soot around the ground lead of the bottom coil where the crank was rubbing on it! Huh.
The best modification was a piece of tubing they had run out of the carb silencer, then drilled a hole in the lower pan and stuck the hose out of there. They told him it was a service bulletin update, lol. I guess its like supercharging the motor 😉
Or maybe it has an exhaust leak and that was the fix? Havent gotten that far yet to getting it running. I cannot imagine it would run all that well with the coil ground arcing everywhere and the mag plate bouncing around. Geesh.

I have a feeling some new techs don’t even know what a carb or a magneto is.
August 2, 2015 at 8:16 pm #21447Yeah, the tube out the lower pan is probably some kid’s idea of a "cold air intake" for more performance. Maybe 5.5000001 hp now. The kids today love those cold air intakes for some reason.
Long live American manufacturing!
August 2, 2015 at 8:31 pm #21448Those are very nice motors. I actually one one of those myself. One of the best Evinrude 5.5’s in my opinion.
I picked mine up with a tank, for $40. The only thing though, when I turned the motor over, it would stop. Hmmmm. I had it on my rack for about a year before I decided to tear into it.
Once I did that, I just found a loose rod bolt. I got lucky and found that the rod and crank were still good and I was able to clean them up and put it back together. Now I have about the smoothest running motor ever seen. LOLFix that little bugger up. You will enjoy using it.
August 2, 2015 at 9:57 pm #21453Hondas are bad for the exhaust pipe under the block rotting out and filling the motor area full of fumes. When this happens, they wont run right with the hood on. Anyway, this happens to a friends Honda 7.5 so he drills a hole in the side of the hood and puts a piece of flexible vacuum cleaner hose from the carb to the hole for a fresh air intake. This worked great for a couple of years until I fixed it properly! 😆
