I need to know which way the gasket between the gearcase and the mid section goes. From the repair parts catalogue it looks like the closed side of the gasket goes over the water side and the open end goes over the gearcase side leaving it open on the front. To me it seems it should seal the gearcase half . Am I wrong?
Frank is right. The closed part goes toward the front, and seals the gear oil. If you notice, the gear oil vent is actually above the gasket in the midsection, so the gasket is a very important separating gear oil from water. I can’t recall why the back side of the gasket is left open.
It has been my thought that the back is open to provide some exhaust back pressure relief to provide better idle. But I say that with no “official” information.
