Is there a proper way to free the cylinder head from the crankcase cover on an HD25?

Gently rapp it with a rubber mallet

Make sure the taper pins are out first. As the name suggests, they are tapered. You have to knock them out in the proper direction.

Frank, your thinking of the crankcase cover; there are none in the cylinder head. Two separate components; and I believe he is talking about the head with the spark plugs in?

That’s what I thought also. But he said cylinder head to crankcase cover. Of course we both know that’s incorrect. So we really don’t know what he’s trying to get apart. I assumed cylinders from crankcase cover, but of course it wouldn’t be the first time I guessed wrong.

Guys, Thanks for the reply – I think removing the taper pins – didn’t realize they were tapered – will allow me to get it loose.
                Thanks much, Jim

When you put it back together, install the taper pins before tightening any of the screws. The pins ensure perfect alignment of the main bearings halves

                    Frank,
Thanks much. Knocking out the pins did the trick. The crankcase cover nearly fell off the cylinder housing (sorry about the earlier confusing reference to the head.)
