Having trouble with leather seals in primer pump on the HD25 2.5HP Johnson. Read the instructions
from Lloyd Lautner saying smooth side down. The leather seals are convex on one side, concave on the
other and I can’t tell which side is smooth. The top brass washer, over the leathers is concave side down,
and the bottom washer is convex side up. My guess is that the leather washers go concave side down,
to correspond with the washers – but that is just an opinion. Any help anyone could give me would be
appreciated. I came aboard after Lloyd Lautners sickness – not sure if he is back yet or not. Would like
to order more leathers also.
You might have to use a magnifying glass but yes, there is a smooth side to the seals. I’m not sure what kind of leather he uses but it’s quite thin and soft. I don’t believe his seals are available at the moment but there is another source for seals in the meantime.
Thank you – I will use a magnifying glass – oh – and thanks for the source. I’m thinking that the smooth side must be the convex side but will check for smoothness. Thank you for your response.
The seals that Lloyd makes are punched from sheet leather. In my experience with them, it has always been very obvious as to which side is the smooth side. You refer to Lloyds instructions, but are you using his seals?
The other seals that I’m familiar with are new old stock from OMC. The OMC seals really don’t have a smooth side, but they do have a concave side and that should face downward.
I tried to use Lloyd’s seals but my money was returned because of his disability. I’ve forgotten where I got new seals but they
are not flat. OK, you are saying that the concave side goes down. Thank you. Thank you.
