The Lockwood brothers started dabbling in manufacturing in the early twentieth century. They acquired an Oldsmobile franchise and added engine service to there list of investments. They began building inboard marine engines in 1907. Mr. Ash joined the company in 1914 And talked them into building outboards. The outboards sold better than the inboards so inboards were eventually dropped from the line. Mr Ash died in 1921 and the Lockwood brothers bought his interest in the company from his heirs. A four horse apposed twin was introduced in 1924 that showed a lot of power for it’s size. The following year a young engineer, Finn T. (Irgie) Irgins was hired and there outboards quickly showed improvement. Irgie had worked with the Johnson brothers in the early ’20s while still an engineering student. His work so impressed Steve Briggs that he bought the Lockwood company to add to OMC. The Lockwood Ace and Chief were designed by Irgie . . . 😀
