I am Bill Fischers’ son in law and I’m fixing one of his boats and motor. The model number is unreadable and all I have is a serial number for his Johnson super sea horse 40 hp on the aluminum Starcraft boat. I will attach pictures of the motor and I hope someone can give me a year or model number so I can order parts. I need a fully functional lower unit, impeller and possibly other tune up parts. Any help is appreciated!
Thank you!!

looks like a model
RD-22 from 1960 or
RD-23 from 1961 a.s.o. a.s.o.

but that model has 35 hp ???June 12, 2017 at 2:01 pm #59532That’s why I’m stumped. And it is a long shaft vs the short for those years. There should be an L in the model number for long shaft I believe. Is there anyone you know of that can look up serial numbers to id it?
June 12, 2017 at 3:13 pm #59543It was common back then for dealers to convert inventory from short to long shaft and vice versa, so that’s not surprising. The ID plate is from a 1958, 35 Super Sea Horse and the case is 1960 40 HP. Look at the engine block on top behind the flywheel or on the starboard side for a quarter-sized shiny silver welch plug with model and serial stamped on it. It tells you what the engine is, regardless of what the ID plate says. i have a few motors where these numbers don’t match and I’m guilty of swapping powerheads on a couple also to make one good motor out of two. Note the 1958 Super Sea Horse and the 1960 40 HP do not accept the same cover without changing a lot of other parts out, so maybe just the transom clamp assembly was swapped?

Maybe I need to get a newer edition of the book? The 1959 and 1960 would easily interchange covers.

Davewhat Garry wrote here was based on the serial nr. only ??
or………..
😎June 12, 2017 at 11:02 pm #59557The silver button on the engine block has the same serial number as the transom mount. No model number stamped anywhere on motor that I can find after looking for quite some time.
