A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Thank you everyone for your input. A local sandblasting company offered to glass bead blast it for $80 to $100.. There are so many grooves and intricate shapes to this 1962 Homelite 55 cowling, that I am tempted to go that route, but use stripper on all the detachable chrome emblems that were painted. The rest of the motor that received brushed on white paint can be sanded easily enough.

I have bead blasted hoods before with good results but you have to use glass beads, not crushed glass. It’s also done with the nozzle held at a distance to avoid damaging the fibreglass or gel coat and is more of a wash than aggressive paint removal. The hood will need some bodywork and sanding done afterwards to prep it for primer. How much depends on how good you want the finished job to look.
