Hello. Regarding the old Homelite 55 hp outboards: Does anyone know the approximate center-to-center distance for the transom clamp screws? It appears pretty wide, and I want to build a stand before I pick up a motor. Thank you.

        I just measured one and it’s 13 13/16th.

Thank you for your quick response. By the way, on which side do you lay the motor for transport? The seller had been given the motor, and has it standing up. When I asked about draining the oil and laying the motor down, I was told only that it can be laid down for transport, nothing about draining oil. Does it need to be drained first? If so, what is the least-messy way to do it? Thanks again.

If it was mine I’d drain it to reduce the chance of a big mess. Drain plug on mine is a 1/4" hex socket pipe plug about half way down the leg. Not sure they are all that way–the oil fill arrangement did change. I think it will be messy and run down the leg.

Not sure about laying it down but probably on opposite side from the shift lever per usual.

For what it’s worth, the old 1980’s Honda 7.5 and 10hp 4 strokes were laid down on the left (port) side, as evidenced by a set of 2 little "feet" type things on the lower pan. You might look for something like this on the Homelite.
