Picked this motor up because it was cheap, never had a 4-stroke before. Weighs 77 lbs, I though it would weigh more. Can anyone tell me anything about these motors, what year, are they dogs or do they get up and go, what to look out for? Thanks
That is a Honda BF75CLA 1982 20″ model. Very good engine. This engine style was manufactured from 1977 to at least 2007. Most parts are available for it.
These blue with yellow prop kicker motors were very common around here until the high thrust Yamaha T9.9’s with high output alternators and power tilt took over. One thing to watch out for is the condition of the short exhaust pipe joining the block to the mid section. It has cooling water going thru it to and they tend to rot out causing exhaust fumes to leak under the hood which affects the motors performance. The dip stick covers were made of plastic and tend to warp, allowing cooling water to enter the crankcase. Honda replacements are made of aluminum. If the motor has been used in salt water, it’s also a good idea to remove the intake manifold and clean any corrosion buildup in the water passages and replace the thermostat at the same time. Other than that, they are great running motors.
Thanks all. I do not know when the last time it ran, but I checked the oil, put it in a tub of water, putted the rope, and it fired right up. Typical Honda.
