I’m rebuilding an older Johnson 2 cylinder opposed outboard. New rings on the piston, the pistons are on the connecting rods…now how to slip the cylinder over those new rings….is there a better way than just trying to pinch the rings together while forcing the cylinder down onto the piston?? The cylinder have a slight taper at the bottom to start the rings into the cylinder…but it’s not going very easy. The new rings have a lot more tension in them and don’t want to come together…appreciate any words of wisdom…thanks, Gary

A wide zip tie works great for that. Just slide the cylinder on the piston with the rings compressed by the zip tie, and cut it off once it slides past the piston.

I have several sizes if these bolt style hose
clamps that work well for me anyway.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Tubs, you find those at a local distributor or order them online?

A lot of us are familiar with Fastenal and I see that they offer a variety of sizes:

I’ve always wanted something like this for compressing piston rings.
Not sure if these are Russian made?

Seen other’s out of plastic for chain saws, but some of the bands are too small.

Thanks for the comments…I was on the right track…just didn’t go far enough. Tried the zip ties but some issues….will try the type of hose clamp shown…I tried a cheaper version…doesn’t work…I need to cover 2 rings at one time…Gary

I have that set made by KD Tools, they work great. The handle is a ratcheting type, so it will keep the rings compressed while you slide the piston in

slice up a pop or beer can with an Exacto knife, Make the width of band you need. Only need one hose clamp for multiple rings simultaneously.

                      Best,
