The HS-15 is an alternate firing 2-½ horse power Johnson built in 1940. It is the Plain Jane version of the HD model that was built through 1951. (A smaller version of the 5 horse TD model.) It runs at higher speeds as a third port motor with the carburetor on the starboard side. Pushing the high speed fuel adjustment primes the outboard through the low speed jet behind the fuel tank. At idle it runs off a rotary valve in the center bearing with the idle adjustment under the fuel tank by the stearing handle support bracket. Compression should be around 65 pounds PSI. The J8C Champion spark plug is gapped at .030" and the magneto breaker points are set at .020". It has all bronze bushings and should run 30 wt. non-detergent oil at a half of a pint to the gallon. The lower unit gear case uses grease. . . 😉

They are a fun little motor to run.The carb may need work incl.Leather washers. Here is the link for instruction and washers : pochefamily.org

The HS 15 is a nice little motor. I bought a pretty nice one at Suter’s meet this year in October. I didn’t have to do anything to mine other than dial in the carb and replace the grease in the gearcase. It’s a nice runner. Here is a video of it running on the boat on my pond. You’ll have fun with it when you get it running. 😉

You can use RR174 or RR176 Echlin condensers

Here is a Johnson capacitor use table for original OMC parts.

                  The 510178 is a typo – that was a 510173 which is replaced by 580321. . . 😀

I had an HS-10 that gave me no end of ignition issues until I got the brushes, brush holders and ground under the flywheel sorted out.

Can someone explain the theory in detail on how this point setup works with the carbon brushes? Found a .18 mfd condenser but still can’t get it to fire.

I’ll be daring and give it a try. You have an alternate firing two cylinder with the coil from an opposed twin. Testing the coil is done like an opposed twin where you test across the plug leads if you have the flywheel off – not lead to ground like a normal alternate firing twin. When everything is working the brushes ground alternate sides of the coil. To do that on the underside of the flywheel is a bakelite disk for an insulator. There are grounding points in it. The brushes make contact on each side and provide the alternating spark. The brush holders have to be clean and provide insulation for the brushes and there has to be contact through the grounding points with the flywheel. Once everything is clean and correct magic happens.
Did that help any? Experts don’t be afraid to jump in here.
