Good thing I haven’t moved into the old iron. I contacted Marty (not from Back to the Future) within 45 mins of his CL initial post, and actually drove past his marina the same day he posted. He and I missed each other by 30 mins (I was boating in his bay that Sunday, but the wind was too aggressive for me to stay out to stick around).

Good score. I’m completely virgin in terms of anything pre-1952, but can recognize a good deal when I see one….

          Joel,

Marty said you had called, but had not showed up yet. He was anxious to see these gone after "storing" them for a couple of years, and I just happened to be the first guy with a strong back and a weak mind to show up with the $50!

what is the year and horse power of these two engines. Bill

            Bill,

These two motors are 1948 models as far as I can tell using serial #’s. The Twin is 6039-20702, and the Four is 7031-07550.

My knee-jerk reaction was to the ‘worth more than this in scrap’ line he had put. On principle, I just cant stand to see part of our history, especially a couple of surviving good quality examples, go to waste this way…ever!

Glad to see a fellow member pick them up. Thats what its all about.

Oh yeah, & by ‘storing,’ Im surmissing that means sitting in a corner of his unheated garage so he can trip over them everyday to and from work!!!!

I’m going to suggest a special interest group is in order. Maybe all of us with old motors over 100 pounds could get together and try to figure out what to actually do with them? My 28 Speeditwin made it back to the shop 3 years ago. I plan to sell it with the property.

Put them on a new/old wood boat and leave them there!

I have been tinkering on the SpeediFour as I have time. I have cleaned the points and carb. I have the lower unit off to clean out the old grease and check gears and bearings. So far all looks good. I will post some pic’s before I reassemble for those who may be interested.

Today’s question refers to the gearcase itself. On both the SpeediTwin and the SpeediFour, the cases appear to be identical on the outside. Gears may be different, and prop is different.

The case of the Four is missing the aluminum plug on the forward side of the gearcase, immediately in front of the propshaft. Is this plug necessary to keep water out, or is it cosmetic to make the case more streamlined.(HaHa, as if this case is streamlined to begin with.)

The attached picture is similar to mine, but mine do not have the extra wings. You can see the "Plug" area right below the water intake slots.

This is what my SpeediFour looks like.

And my Speeditwin. Love the greasefitting!

Today I took the lower unit of the SpeediFour completely apart and cleaned the gearcase out. The "plug" I asked about in the above post is not cosmetic, but needed to keep water out of the grease. I can see the rollers of the front prop shaft bearing through the hole now that things are clean.

Other than that it looks very good inside. Except for that window in the front.

So I finally got new bearing races installed and made a new "plug" for the SpeediFour. Turned out quite well.
