I was driving home after turkey hunting, minding my own business… when an estate sale jumped up and bit me. I probably made what can be considered a donation to the family of the deceased but I brought these home. The Elgin is easy enough to identify but the Western Auto isn’t something I have seen before. The tag on the western auto model number reads WDS3 and the model number on the Elgin is 571 58722. Any good or bad info? The lady was asking $200 each for them 😯 I gave her $100 for both and felt like I was probably not getting the best end of the deal. But, maybe I can get one or both of them to run. Projects for the summer I guess.

Wd3 is the slightly weaker Mercury KD3 3.2 hp, they run well. water pump impeller can be a treat to find, has 2 types if memory serves, one is the wobbler, the other is the veined..

The one with an E on it is an anchor in my sorry eyes…..LOL not a fan of those, and I don’t know why…lol

I wish I had the opportunity to look around for the recoil for the Western Auto.

Richard, yeah. This one may just be a parts motor. I will see.

Probably gonna need a new set of coils and wires. Luckily for me I have a new 1′ section of wire.

              not only the recoil
you need the front cowling around the carb.
              and the sparkplug cover.
luck for you, new castings are available
              😉

That’s funny 😆 . I’m picking up my 1 foot piece this afternoon 🙁 . To make matters worse, I have to pay another $4.00 as it shipped to a post box outfit that charges a handling fee.

I think you can get some aftermarket coils that will work from rock auto for around $25.00 each. Standard Motor Products coil #S3604 $27.95 rockauto.com.

Sears Elgin is a 1955 7.5hp made by West Bend>Chrysler>Force>Mercury. They weren’t too bad a motor, considering.

See if you can locate a pair of the Wico orange shellac coated coils. They’ll last forever. Remember, the coil laminations stay in their original position.

Is that a 7 1/2 Elgin or maybe a 5 hp? I have a couple of parts motors that are the 7 1/2 models, I may be able to help with the missing front control panel cover. I actually like those green Elgin’s. You wouldn’t believe how much power they have, even compared to an OMC.

                        I believe it is a 7.5 hp.
